“Hip Hop Healthy Heart” Program Description

The Problem

Childhood obesity has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and continues to grow at an alarming rate. In just two decades, the prevalence of being overweight doubled for U.S. children ages 6 to 11 — and tripled for American teenagers. The annual National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that about one-third, or 25 million, of U.S. children are overweight or at risk of becoming overweight.

Overweight children are at risk for serious physical and mental health conditions like:

·         Type 2 diabetes

·         High blood pressure

·         High cholesterol

·         Sleeping disorders

·         Low self-concept and poor body image

·         Depressive symptoms

It has become unmistakable that the health behaviors adopted in childhood are directly related to the onset of cardiovascular disease later in life. Overweight adolescents have a 70 percent chance of becoming overweight or obese adults. This increases to 80 percent if one or more parent is overweight or obese. (United States Department of Health and Human Services)

Prevention

Studies have shown that health education programs in schools effectively reduce the prevalence of health risk factors that lead to the onset of adult chronic disease.  The CDC reports that school-based health education programs that address prevention of unhealthy behaviors are the most effective method of combating cardiovascular illnesses and can reduce the prevalence of obesity by 50% among elementary school children.

Each day 50 million children and young people attend more than 110,000 schools in this country.  This amounts to a considerable audience for health behavior education.  Congress has emphasized the opportunity presented to our schools when it urged government health institutions and programs to “expand support of school coordinated health education programs.”

Positive Living’s Hip Hop Healthy Heart Program

In response to the growing need for educational intervention in the lives of today’s youth, Positive Living has joined the national effort to stem the tide of cardiovascular morbidity by developing a unique and exciting program called Hip Hop Healthy Heart.  This K-6th grade cardiovascular disease prevention program is a hands-on learning experience that includes enrichment materials for science, math and language skills.  Learning is totally interactive as students explore cardiovascular risk factors and the steps to preventing them.  The program emphasizes healthy diet, consistent exercise and positive thinking in five lesson plans that include:

  1. Meet Doctor Beat . . . Your Fascinating Heart
  2. Eat Good Food, Dude . . . Nutrition for Great Health
  3. Take Down da’ Pressure . . . Keeping The Pressure Down
  4. Improve Your Groove . . . The Many Benefits of Exercise
  5. Grin it, Win it . . .Dental Health Means Heart Health
  6. Think Hip ‘n Happy . . . Positive Thinking for Healthy Heart

Maximizing Results

Positive Living is collaborating with national experts in each of the above subjects to deliver extraordinary results supported by state-of-the-art illustrations and 3-D animations. The program features the “hippest” animated cartoon characters that will educate and entertain children going through the program. When children identify with animated characters it helps improve retention of materials and adoption of new lifestyles. Lessons include a sample lecture, recipe demonstrations,

background information, teaching suggestions, handouts, visual aids and much more.

Modules are designed to encourage participation with Continuing Education Credits for teachers, and a goal-setting point system for children that coordinates with their school curriculums. Other incentives for program completion will be sponsor prize awards for children, parents and teachers.
